Measurement Guide

1. What are eye wrinkles?

A wrinkle is a fold, ridge or crease on the otherwise smooth skin. For many, wrinkle is nearly identical to aging since it is such a dominant and easily visible feature in aged skin. Formation of wrinkles is the natural process of aging where the skin loses collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acids. However, some external factors can really speed up skin aging, for example sun exposure, pollutants and smoking. Putting skin aging into numbers, collagen production begins to decrease in early 20s, in early 30s our body starts to lose more collagen than it can produce. In general the first signs of skin aging appears around the age of 25 beginning with the skin around the eyes.

To assist diagnosis of eye wrinkles, a skin image needs to be taken under the PPL light using the Chowis Mobile Analyzer for Skin. To be specific, in each image we study the depth and length of wrinkles and classify them as ultra-fine wrinkles, fine wrinkles, deep wrinkles, and ultra-deep wrinkles and visualize them as follows:

  • Yellow - ultra fine wrinkles
  • Orange - fine wrinkles
  • Green - deep wrinkles
  • Purple - ultra deep wrinkles

Our algorithm then evaluates eye wrinkles in the image and provide a final wrinkle grading. In this grading, deeper wrinkles are given a higher weight.

2. Chowis eye wrinkle grade

The following Chowis eye wrinkles grade has been co-developed by Chowis and dermatology experts. For each image, we detect eye wrinkles to provide a quantified score. An expert approved questionnaire is also included, as an option, in order to understand a customer's lifestyle and habits and obtain a fuller profile of the customer's skin. Taking into account the questionnaire results, the final score for eye wrinkles is computed as the weighted average of the image score and questionnaire score. In case that questionnaire is skipped, only image score will be used. Based on the scale shown in Table 1, we grade eye wrinkles into clear, almost clear, mild, moderate and severe.

Table 2. Eye wrinkle grade
GradeScaleDescription
Clear0 ~ 5Clear and smooth skin with no wrinkles or only mild perceptible wrinkles
Almost Clear6 ~ 15Skin with some shallow wrinkles
Mild16 ~ 48Skin with moderate amount of wrinkles, may notice moderately deep wrinkles as well
Moderate49 ~ 80Skin with obvious wrinkles, some deep wrinkle with visible well-defined edges may present
Severe81 ~ 99Wide spread of wrinkles. May see some very deep wrinkles with redundant folders
